I know people who thought I was insane for even suggesting that something like this could happen. Its wasn’t a matter of “if”, it was “when”.
Whenever you apply a monetary value to something, it becomes a commodity. Your life has a monetary value and under a national health plan, its a national debt, not a personal one. You don’t get to decide its value anymore. Its in the hands of a bean counter or a political hack.
I discussed the idea of insurance companies giving discounts if you have a living will. It runs the same way. Your life is monetized according to the requirements of the living will. Imagine if you have a stipulation that if you are in a coma for 30 days, pull the plug. Do you think the insurance company is going to authorize an expensive procedure that might bring you out of it on day 29? Not a chance. Its cheaper if you die than pay for that procedure, get you out of the coma, and then all the expense for recovery.
